Workshops in France - Workshops and Retreats
Our mission to bring artists together in wonderful destinations to be inspired by their surroundings and the creativity that comes from working in small enrichment groups. Workshops and retreats are designed to provide guests with an ideal environment for creating art while enjoying themselves to the fullest. Our unique locations have been selected for its fantastic weather, sensational scenery, rich tapestry of historical towns and villages, not to mention the cuisine and wines of these regions.

​Live Zoom Watercolor Workshops and Classes with Judy Mudd
Paint-along, ask questions and review during workshops. Reference materials, including drawing guides, reference photos, and palette colors are provided prior to class. After the workshop, a session video is provided to registered students to download and review again and again. Can't attend live? You can still register, receive the materials and recording to paint on your own.
Ongoing Wednesday Painting Class

This ongoing class is designed to help each individual with the information and process to take your work to a higher level. For the most part we will be using photos to work from and learning not to just copy, but to interpret!  I will be giving demos and presentations of the process I use to create a better work of art by learning and applying the elements and principles of design. It is our job to employ these elements and principles to make our paintings more compelling and interesting. I hope you can join us.

Landscape Painting Workshops in Italy

Etruscan Places offers a unique series of open air painting workshops on location, rain or shine, in some of Italy’s most spectacular landscapes. Artists, curators, writers Maddine Insalaco and Joe Vinson live in both the USA and Italy. Their presence in Tuscany since 1995 guarantees their knowledge of the landscape and local culture. Fees include materials and surfaces, equipment, meals, accommodation, field trips and local transport. 12 student max and 2 instructors every class. Reduced rates for extended stays.

Bluebird Studios is “The Atelier of the West” and our goal is to provide our guests with a warm, welcoming gathering place in an open, comfortable, and well-equipped studio space for the study of traditional fine arts under the guidance of professional artists. We offer art workshops in oil, pastel and watercolor painting and this year we have added a sculpture class! Our workshops are taught in studio and plein air. We offer something for all! Beginners to advanced.

Ned Mueller - Online Expressive Drawing Workshop

We will concentrate on learning how to draw and construct a fine expressive portrait. You will learn the simple basic proportions of the head and to develop and sharpen your eye to see the placement of the major features. We will work in Bistre Conte and/or 2B compressed charcoal as it is very flexible and useful in learning this process. You will learn some fairly easy steps in getting the proportions and structure of the head using photos of strong character models that show off the structure and planal changes of the head along with a strong light and shadow pattern to work from. We will work on how to break the head down into simple value patterns and with the use of lost and found edges make a compelling portrait. We will go over the generic structure of the individual features of the face, those being the eye, nose, mouth and ear so you get a strong understanding of these features. You will learn how to see and interpret the forms and values to get a strong likeness.

Carlo Levi & Aliano: Historic Itinerary Workshop for Advanced Painters

In this one-time collaborative effort with Museums of Aliano (MuA) advanced painters will have the opportunity to stay in MuA's artist residency spaces while working in the stunning landscapes of Aliano in Italy’s southern province of Matera. Aliano is most famously associated with Carlo Levi, one of Italy’s most important intellectual and cultural figures of the 20th century. Painter, writer and social activist, his international best seller “Christ Stopped at Eboli” was based on Levi’s experiences in Aliano in 1935-36. Many of his most important paintings were executed during this period. Artists will work in the town, local landscape and other destinations. Lectures and museum visits will be organized by the MuA staff. 2 artist organizers will work directly with participants each day. Daily reviews. Exhibition of work at program conclusion. Ned Mueller - Four Week Preparatory Class
Limited to eight students

For beginners to intermediate, this course has the intention of introducing new students to Neds working methods and process. A lot of our students are returning to us for our Wednesday Morning classes, as a result, Ned wanted to have time with new students to focus on them with a more directed basic course focused on their needs .
The aim of this course will be to assess each students needs and introduce Neds working methods to new students. After teaching for over 60 years Ned is convinced that most paintings are ruined at the start, as we don't do the important preliminary work of doing value and color studies to get things down in a smaller and quicker way to see what is working and what isn't.
Ned will go over types of material, introduction to design,how to use photographs, the value of value studies with demonstrations on how to think about and apply this working method to students own work.
"The old Masters worked in value only for four years, when I was in Art School we worked in value for two years, once a student sees how important and valuable they are they are willing to do them. They make us better Artists!"

Still Lifes in Oil: Capturing The Light with Manon Sander

Stay with Manon at a rustic lakeside lodge for an immersive painting retreat on beautiful Lake Martin, where you will discover Manon’s studio secrets about how to paint vibrant, light filled Still Lifes by implementing techniques that will replace random decision-making with intentional choices. Manon will be arranging uniquely beautiful, colorful Still Lifes in our studio and will break down her process step by step in order to give you the confidence to use your new skills on your own. With a hands-on approach you will dive deeply into color mixing and the use of color before you begin your own painting, and you will receive plenty of attention at your easel.
This workshop will help you replace a trial-and-error approach with informed decision-making in order to capture the light in your paintings using luminous color no matter the subject.

Paint Beautiful Lake Como With Me!

Please join me for another unforgettable painting journey—this time to Lake Como, the world-renowned resort destination in stunning northern Italy. Famous for its dramatic alpine scenery, Lake Como is one of Europe’s deepest glacial lakes, celebrated for its shimmering blue waters, historic lakeside villas, and enchanting villages. This area provides one of the most picturesque scenes in the world, just waiting to be painted by you. Envision yourself waking up in our charming family-owned small boutique hotel, fortifying yourself with a steaming cappuccino and Italian breakfast, then heading out with your new artist friends and me for a day of painting en plein air the inspiring views of the lake, flowers, old buildings, the Alps, and cobble-stoned romantic streets. We might even take the ferry to several of our painting locations. In the evening we will relax together over a delicious Italian meal and some vino, reminisce about the fabulous day we've had, and plan the next exciting day.
